Secret Instagram features

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I spend half of my day scrolling through Instagram. Maybe it’s because monitoring and posting to social media is part of my job (who am I kidding, that’s not why). I’ve been on Instagram for years and I’m still figuring out new features and tricks about the app. Okay so maybe these features and tricks aren’t a secret per se, but they aren’t well known. So here are some tips and tricks to make the most of your Instagramming obsession.

You can see every post you’ve ever liked

Go to your profile, click on the options icon, and select “Posts You’ve Liked”. You’ll be able to see every picture you’ve ever liked on Instagram. I don’t use this feature very often but I find it helpful when i’m trying to remember an account or show someone a picture I’ve seen!

Change the order of Instagram filters and hide the ones you never use

At the end of the long list of filters there’s a ‘Manage’ icon. Here you can move around the order of the filters so that your favourites are all first and you don’t have to scroll to find them. Hold down on the name of the filter and drag it up or down to change the order. You can also hide the filters you don’t use by tapping on the checkmark next to the filter name. When the filter is hidden it shows up faded. I love “Reyes” and “Valencia” so I put these first in my list of filters so I never have to scroll through all the filters to find them.

Create a board of saved posts

Go to your Instagram profile and tap on the bookmark icon on the right. Press the “+” in the top right corner to create a collection board and then title your board. Go back to your Instagram feed and when you see something you want to save click the bookmark icon under the post. Press “save to collection” and press the icon for the board you want to save the post to. Go back to your collection on your Instagram profile and you’ll be able to see everything you’ve saved. I use this one to save recipes and DIY crafts!

Save your edited photos (without posting them)

Instagram has so many filters and great editing features but in order to save your edited pictures, you have to post them to Instagram. Lucky for you, there’s a way around this. First, make sure you have “save original photos” turned on in your settings. Edit your picture in Instagram as you normally would but when you get to the last page before you post, turn your phone on airplane mode. Press share and your photo will attempt to post, the post will fail but the edited image will save to your camera roll. You’ll see a message on your Instagram feed that says “we’ll try again once there’s a better connection”. Make sure you click the ‘X’ next this message or once you turn off airplane mode the image will post. Voila! Now you can use these photos anywhere you want.

Get notifications when your fave accounts post

Okay so you might already know this one but I just love this feature. Visit your favourite accounts and press the three dots on the top right of the screen. Select “turn on post notification” and Instagram will let you know when the account uploads a new post.
